A central Virginia company took the day off from the office on Tuesday to build skateboards for foster kids in the area.

Park Properties says that with the new skate park opening soon in Charlottesville, it would be great to provide foster kids with boards to enjoy there. The company, which manages apartment communities throughout Virginia, had employees from all over the state come together for a team building day.

While team building is important, Park Properties said it is also important that they give back to the community. The company hopes this project will show their employees that they are a part of something bigger than their titles.

“They are a part of a company that does care to give back and for them to be able to do that hands-on, I think that’s important and it will come full circle in that sense that doing good feels good,” said regional marketing manager of Park Properties Ashley Kantruss.

The skateboard building project is part of the nonprofit Together We Rise, which will collect the boards and donate them to foster kids. Together We Rise provided the supplies and tools to make the skateboards.

“We do this every year, but it just feels good to come out and really put something together to help foster kids,” said Ian Schmit of Park Properties. “I think there’s a lot of comradery and brotherly love in the skateboarding community.”

Park Properties said they are happy to give the children something that will get them outside, off the TV screens, and on the new skate park that will be opening soon.

“Charlottesville has this great skate park that they’ve been working on for quite some time and should be opening up soon, so it seemed appropriate to be able to provide this to local foster kids to they can also take advantage of the nice skate park in town,” Kantruss said.

The skateboards will be delivered later this week.

This CAMT Credential is a nationally recognized program developed and made available by the National Apartment Association Education Institute (NAAEI) and is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). In Spring of 2018, NAAEI and the local NAA affiliate, the Virginia Apartment Management Association (VAMA), partnered with PVCC Workforce Services department to bring the course to the Greater Charlottesville area that took place Saturdays from March 10th - May 19th. The PVCC Educational Foundation partnered with VAMA and the Piedmont Workforce Network to provide scholarship grants to eligible students as a reimbursement for education expenses.

This recognition will be the first resulting from the training offered through Park Properties Management Company’s apprenticeship program titled, “The Park Academy”. After completing the CAMT eleven-week Saturday course schedule and required test, both Kenneth and Shane have achieved this honorable designation and reflect on their experience thus far as members of the Park Academy. “I was excited and honored that the company felt that I was worth making such a big investment in,” Shane continues, “I really enjoyed the hands-on experience.”

Kenneth also agrees that he was “happy to make the eleven-week sacrifice to learn some new things and refresh my understanding in other topics,” in addition to being utilized as the “teacher’s helpers by helping to show and demonstrate to the class while in the apartment workspace”.

Since completing the CAMT designation, both Shane and Kenneth feel that their Park Academy training has also helped their individual onsite experiences and with their peers. After receiving more detailed training, Shane mentions that he has been able to utilize this in his guidance with his onsite team to complete appliance repairs. Kenneth also mentions that this refresher experience will be helpful while “walking other Park Properties maintenance team members through basic repairs even over phone.” This CAMT course has encouraged the way both of these Park Properties maintenance members feel about their role as Park Academy members, raving that is was “a great experience overall and can’t wait to take more classes!”

Mark Corradino and Ashley Kantruss of Park Properties meet with Charlie Hall, Secretary of the Toy Lift

December 5, 2017 | Charlottesville, VA.- 12 new kids’ bicycles and helmets were donated to the Charlottesville Toy Lift this Friday, December 1st, on behalf of Park Properties, a local company that manages residential communities and some commercial properties throughout Virginia. This contribution was proudly organized as a result of their annual company-wide team-building day, and the fruits of their comradery will soon reach their final destination at a local home this Christmas.

Employees traveled from across the state to participate in this year’s team-building day, where the construction of these bicycles resulted from a friendly competition. Each team earned different parts of the bicycle by completing a variety of challenges, then as a team built and tested the bike prior to joining in the final race. Winners got bragging rights and everyone got to share in the accomplishment of true teamwork and charity.

After one final inspection with the help of the Blue Ridge Cyclery (where these bikes first started this special journey), they are on their way to the toy shop to get geared up and ready to meet their new owner under the Christmas tree.
